A year said to be unlike any other, 2012 has finally arrived. May it be the end of the world according to some, for Project Ethos it marks a new beginning. Since our first show, Project Ethos has evolved into a production that has continued to exceed our wildest imaginations. As a fusion of local media, local talent and—of course—locals, bringing you what is new under one roof, for one night is what Project Ethos is all about. Driven by unprecedented opportunity, this year Project Ethos is ready to announce our next big step.

Beginning as a showcase of emerging talent in Los Angeles, Project Ethos has expanded into a multi-city event that pushes the contemporary limits of exposing what and who is new, now, and next. Setting the stage for other groups who have attempted to follow in our footsteps, this movement has become a cultural phenomenon. By fusing the talent of underground movers with the minds of industry makers, this one night wonder is going digital.

In an effort to bring the underground scene to a new place in the media market, Project Ethos is kicking off 2012 with a new mission. To transform ourselves beyond a one-night production and into an online destination for local music, fashion and art with an all new ProjectEthos.TV.

As Project Ethos has made a point to share the work of local masterminds through exclusive events in cities such as San Diego, Los Angeles, Scottsdale, San Francisco, and Portland the next step is to share this show with the World Wide Web. ProjectEthos.TV is a brainchild of everything you can expect from the in-house production in addition to weekly updates, videos and interviews from locals in music, art and fashion. Featuring special interviews and behind-the-scene looks into the creative lives of folks from all over, ProjectEthos.TV is your new interactive gateway to discovering the next level of talent and entertainment.

Project Ethos to Launch Online Experience

in partnership with United Motion Entertainment

Television based hub ProjectEthos.tv to provide mass exposure and sales for the emerging arts

Since 2005, the Project Ethos platform has primarily been live events - a fashion show, concert and art gallery all under one roof, in one night. Attendees have flocked to a fresh experience while participants received the tools they needed – unique innovation that put fashion, music, art, buyers, media and the public in the same room for the first time ever.

Partnering with Los Angeles based new-media studio United Motion Entertainment, Project Ethos is poised to bring the entire event experience online. The roll out of a web series based on past and present participants accompanied by a full blown online store will set the stage to revolutionize how designers, artists and musicians interact with the public.

Our culture has a fascination with fashion. In displaying the raw aptitude behind the art of clothing, exposing designers with true flair is what we love to deliver. Project Ethos creates a unique opportunity for buyers, media and consumers to engage in a fun and fashionable atmosphere. The line-up is equipped with live runway show with live models who take the designer looks to the next level. Looking back on 2011, our fashion designer participation was unmatchable.

Last year, Frederick’s of Hollywood Swimwear officially launched their new swim line at each show and with the likes of Seth Aaron Henderson of Project Runway who premiered his ready-to-wear line at on our stage at LA Fashion Week in March, we strive to find and showcase designers that are fine and fierce. In addition, our Vitamin Water sponsor designer challenge offered a fresh take on inspiration. With local designers competing to win, attendees text-voted live on their favorite piece to determine the best look. Each city show featured hand-picked local faces for exclusive Made-In-the-USA exhibition of fashion. 2011 Music Re-cap

The 2011 Los Angeles Fashion Week show at The Avalon set the music bar for the rest of the year. Project Ethos LA began with a bang with a live performance by the soulful indie rockers, Robotanists, who debuted songs from their new record “Plans In Progress”. Afterward, Australian DJ Duo Yolanda be Cool was a favorite with their hit “We no Speak Americano”.

Other notable highlights were featuring such acts as Mann (SD), Geographer (SF), The Maul Shoppe (SD), and The Black Cards featuring Pete Wentz (LA).

With the power of the mp3, music today is heard in a multitude of ways. From the internet to iTunes, finding new music is instantaneous. While the web has allowed music to take on new forms of exposure, live music will always be true to unveiling real talent. Each Project Ethos is comprised of one-of-a-kind musicians selected by founder Jason Peskin and Music Director, Scott Warren who aim to find industry game-changers. In fact, it was Project Ethos 2010 that soulful Bruno Mars made his first live music appearance.

“[In] 2011 Ethos traveled to four cities in the spring and again in the fall. It was a first for us, but what an invigorating experience it was. Being able to discover and seek out untapped talent in cities where a show like ours has never existed before” says Art Director, Dani Goodman of Project Ethos last season.

Art is the essence of culture and is key to unveiling a true underground ethos. In the same way we see changes in music and fashion trends, modern art is evolving just the same. New styles and tactics are tested and contested with each generation. All happening outside of museums and established galleries, contemporary art deserves a place to be seen, too.

Project Ethos makes way for local artists to connect with the world that inspires them. In selecting creative and artistic minds from each city, each Project Ethos is reflective of surrounding community in all respects. The art appreciated in LA is not going to be the same in San Diego, San Fran or Scottsdale, but that is what makes our show the only one of its kind.

It's five minutes to midnight and Far East Movement can't take the stage until I say the word "GO!" Over 2500 attendees danced and rocked-out to one of the hottest musical acts in the nation. At that moment Project Ethos 10 changed my life forever.

In 2005, Jason Peskin gave me an opportunity to design a flyer for a new event he created, Project Ethos. I jumped at the chance to be a part of what I felt was a creative movement unlike any other. Four years later, that same flyer led to the production of the hottest event in Los Angeles. Project Ethos has become so influential in terms of providing a platform for artists, musicians, fashion designers, graphic designers, producers and all creative minds to express what they do best.

After 11 glorious shows, it was time to find my own "Project Ethos." I started a company called Towelmate and it was born out of that same creative spirit I found at that first show in 2005. The values I cultivated and nurtured in my time with Project Ethos gave me the skills and courage to go out on my own. I'm excited and proud to share with my Ethos family what I've been cooking up in my creative laboratory. I encourage you to check out my website: www.towelmate.com as we officially launch this week.

Without Project Ethos, I would not be where I am today. It's the joy and fulfillment that I received in my five years with Project Ethos that drives me to succeed. Arizona Artist Spotlight

The Mint Restaurant and Ultra Lounge will be exhibiting a contemporary art gallery all evening utilizing half indoor half outdoor space to create a unique touch to the artistic forum. Here a variety of mediums are sure to please the visual palettes of an enthusiastic audience. Artwork by local artists Dave Carender, Josh Flood, Kevin Barbro, and Melo Dominguez will be producing pieces that embody creativity, imagination, and emotion.

Their art consists of watercolors, ink, acrylic, stencils, plaster, clothing and photography. Each artist is influenced by diverse factors that have impacted their lives through social or cultural experiences. Dave Carender is an artist, writer, action movie enthusiast, comic book nerd, and video game aficionado that portrays his interest by creating cartoon-like figures with a twist.

While Josh Flood wants to show how pop art should have more to do with what's going on in the world today and how that world relates to our everyday lives. Flood is part of a group of local artists working to connect young people to art through events, projects and volunteering.

Kevin Barbro specializes in drawing, painting, and graphic design. His work highlights images and ideas of vultures and other figures with shadow work through light and dark contrast. The paintings are filled with mystery and hidden emotion with every stroke.

Another artist who has captured the hearts of many through her artwork is Melo Dominguez. It is said that her main focus is to find the spirit and soul within her art. We definitely see the layers that make up her art as she highlights social and political themes and street culture.

Project Ethos Music Spotlight: Anjulie

The multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and self proclaimed "popaholic" Anjulie will be taking over the stage in Arizona for Ethos’ final production of the year! Her performance will keep the party going with hits like Don't Call Me Baby, Boom, and Brand New Bitch.

The Toronto native has said to have been influenced by an array of music that ultimately gave birth to a sensational sophisticated blend of pop, hip-hop edginess, and cultural spice. Sultry vocal styling is what really sets Anjulie’s records off and allows her to unleash a sense of euphoria while performing. So don’t be surprised when you hear blends of Afro-Caribbean calypso, reggae, and Latin vibes emanating from Anjulie’s pop electric voice. Be ready for a hot performance that will have you dancing the night away.

AZ Flavor Fashionista Designers

Project Ethos’ upcoming event in Scottsdale, Arizona will showcase four astonishing local designers that will be competing to become the next fashionista! The hopeful four each stand a chance to win a prize pack of their choice worth $3,000 in the vitaminwater zero™ sponsored "Flavor Fashionista Challenge." Eager creative talents are given a $200 budget to produce a garment inspired by a particular flavor of vitaminwater zero™ which will then be premiered within the runway show. Project Ethos Intern Experience

If you are looking for an internship that is exciting, challenging, and improves your communication skills, Project Ethos is the place to be! I am a Communication major with an emphasis on Advertising and found myself learning about all sorts of integrated marketing. I have been in charge of contracting sponsors for the VIP bags. While it may seem that getting free stuff is easy, it’s not in this economy. Yet after rigorous training and mock calls I found companies that were more than willing to donate. If I may say so myself it was a great feeling to know that all my hard work paid off and was able to see it all come together during the LA Fashion Week kick off. I was able to share the Ethos vision to other companies and implement marketing strategies that would benefit both parties. Yes I was able to receive 500 pieces of FREE merchandise from companies throughout the country and highlight significant products. This involved researching companies, researching their merchandise and analyzing how they could benefit our VIP attendees. After it was all said and done I was truly proud of myself and excited to showcase such fabulous products.

During the actual show, I was considered a runner. Literally it meant I was running across the whole venue at all times in five inch heels, another task I believed to be impossible. Yet lo and behold it was very possible and great exercise for my calves! I was in charge of escorting VIPs to their designated areas, which meant networking. I met everyone from radio representatives to the Princess of Denmark to Miss Regional California and enjoyed every second of it. Overall it was amazing to see the whole Ethos community come together and create such an unforgettable event.

One major part of this public relations internship is learning! If you are willing to learn, Project Ethos will truly teach you diverse techniques that apply to several areas of the work field. As a public relations intern on the media team, I was in charge of creating and sending out pitch letters to different media outlets, placing phone calls, and drafting up fact sheets for some of the participants during LA Fashion Week. The most exciting part of my internship is being an active part of the clients' PR efforts. Here at Project Ethos you really get to be hands on with various aspects of the event. On the day of the event you can expect to be doing a little bit of everything from setting up chairs to preparing VIP bags. Overall, you will get to see the venue come to life from scratch. The night of the event I checked in press and talent; one of the cool things with that is being able to see the media you contacted attend the show. Seeing all your efforts come together the night of the event is so rewarding. To sum it up it is an incredible experience. I would recommend an internship like this to everyone!

The anticipation for the extravagant LA Fashion Week kick off at the House of Blues on Sunset was underway and everyone was putting the final touches for the unforgettable night. When we arrived to the venue everyone was excited to see Pete Wentz’s band the Black Cards perform, Will. I. Am’s clothing line preview and the live art show. Yet before all of our hard work paid off and we could claim success, we had to wait for our assigned task to assure a smooth show. I was part of the curator team and VIP seating overflow on the day of the show which involved me making sure that the seating arrangement was settled. Little did I know that I would also be involved in multiple tasks, like setting up the VIP chairs according to seating arrangements and organizing the VIP bags. One might consider seating arrangements an easy task yet overflowing crowds that turn restless became a constant struggle.

Now, before the show I was in charge of contacting art galleries to search for emerging artists and also invited art galleries to our show. As a Business major that minored in Marketing Promotion and International Business, I was excited to see the success of all of our marketing and promotions strategies on the night of the show. Another cool factor was researching various companies before contacting them and learning how to communicate/network with clients even when they were out of state. What’s so great about contacting sponsors or talking to companies about our show is that we get to practice and improve our business communication skills and eloquence. Overall I felt beyond satisfied to work on this show because I learned how to throw an amazing event through hands on experience, not a manual.

I started interning with Project Ethos about a month before one of their biggest events, LA Fashion Week 2011. With so little time to go, there was still so much to do in preparation for the show. Being a part of the media and promotion team, I was working with Public Relations to spread the word about our event. While Project Ethos has only been around since 2005, they have already gained a certain reputation for showcasing some of the hottest emerging talent in fashion, music, and art. I contacted multiple media outlets, pitched our show and invited them to experience Ethos as a VIP guest. I was also assigned to create fact sheets for some of the participants in the show. It was great insight to see how different artists are inspired by various elements.

The day of the show came, and I was very excited to see what went on behind the scenes with production. I saw artists set up their galleries, designers sewing last minute garments, and the models rehearsing up and down the runway. Each intern had a specific assignment for the night and I was assigned to check in VIP guests on the runway. When the doors opened, it was a little nerve racking dealing with all the people. The atmosphere was filled with excitement, minor chaos, and I was ready to soak it in. Once everyone on my list was checked in, I was able to go inside and help out with productions behind the scenes which allowed me to enjoy the show from a whole new perspective.

Project Ethos Artist Spotlight: LAFW Artists

LAFW art work will be hosted by Crossroads restaurant with visual artist on display all night! Our artists include Allison Reimold, Alexander dcd Smith, Tom Garner, James Naccarato, Ronnie Ray Mendez and Waelad Akadan. $tatus Faction, Gregory Siff, Kophns One, and Mar all street artists from the Site Unscene will be doing live paintings throughout the night.

Contemporary artists Waelad Akadan and Allison Reimold are internet sensations that are breaking in to the art industry by flooding the web with their creations. Waelad Akadan and Allison Reimold have also partnered up with Society6, a site created by thousands of artists from around the world to display and sell their art. Los Angeles native, Allison Reimold, has also made a name for herself through her blog "The Reimold Effect" and website www.allisonreimold.com. Both artists produce pieces with intricate designs that exude raw emotion.

While Alexander D.C.D. Smith's story began with tracing cartoons at an early age, the artist explores the tension between opposites: dark and bright, glossy and matte, precision and spontaneity, structure and freedom. His work is inspired by urban and Asian cultures, typography, early cartoons, sports history, entertainment design, motor sports, and manufacturing techniques. His techniques are apparent through a wide range of pieces in a variety of materials, including canvas, wood panel, wall murals, clothing and shoes, furniture, motorcycle helmets, and skateboards. Smith says, "If paint will stick to it, I will paint it."

Then we have our international artist Thomas Garner who grew up in San Diego, lived in Padua, Italy for 24 years and currently lives and works between Italy and Los Angeles. He is also head of the Graphic Design Dept. at Lucky Brand Jeans and teaches a course at UCLA Extension titled Classical Oil Painting in the Style of the Venetian Masters. If that wasn't enough he's also a sculptor! Overall he is widely recognized in the fashion industry due to his international achievements around the world.

James Naccarato's style comes from his interest in 16th and 17th Century classical painting, cubism, and surrealism. Inspired by California culture and identifying with street art, comics, and various underground art movements lead him to study Fine Art and Illustration. It was then that Naccarato developed his signature style of painting underground art movements and became known for his colorful and playful, fictional, creatures that still feel very natural, organic and possibly preternatural. He also admits that consistent paranormal activity influences the way he views the world.

The designers featured at Project Ethos’ upcoming event for LA Fashion Week are anything but ordinary. This extraordinary array of talent draws influence from all over the world. Not only culturally through style and tradition, but also through a larger world purpose; they create stunning fashions that are sure to create a stir this October. From Brian Terry, a true “Brit Boy,” to Sarah Nami Ahn, a US Army brat born in Korea, the show's eclectic styles will bring an international feel to LA Fashion Week.

Brian Terry, Designer of Brit Boy, focuses on bringing the feel of London style and design to the US. His designs range from apparel that features the Union Jack to euroclub party dresses. This creative and unique view of fashion comes from Terry’s extensive travels, experience in acting/photography, and his background as a former aerospace engineer.

Then we have Baltimore's own Lauren Nicole who is coming to LA to show off her wide range of experience that comes from designing costumes for the Los Angeles Ballet company to working for several LA based junior designers to styling a variety of personal clients. However, she admits that her real passion is creating one-of-a-kind custom party dresses. Now for the first time she is ready to show the world her complete ready-to-wear collection. Her design philosophy remains the same as it always has: "To design pieces that are missing from her own closet...pieces that make her happy...pieces that will make any woman feel like a rock star."

Our next designer, Sarah Nami Ahn, was born in Korea but raised in several parts of the world. She moved 22 times before she turned 18 and uses all the experiences in her life for her collection. Her designs are bold, colorful and aesthetically pleasing. They look trendy yet sophisticated. She is inspired by her heritage, especially the art of origami and her world travels. With her birthday being on Earth Day it has always been important for her work to be sustainable and to use green materials.

Environmental consciousness is not unfamiliar to our next designer. In fact, it is the brand’s main purpose. Multeepurpose aims to give fashion and design a deeper sense of meaning. Ethos is back in LA everyone, and Black Cards, featuring Fall Out Boy’s former bassist/front man Pete Wentz, will be making their Los Angeles debut during LA FASHION WEEK!!! That's right, we’ve booked the electric sensation to play a live concert at the House of Blues on October 14th.

The Black Cards have toured overseas and performed three shows out on the east coast, but this will be their first performance in Cali and we are ecstatic to have them join us for LA Fashion Week. If you haven’t heard the Black Cards, they’re a mixture of dance/ska/reggae and rock/pop with a new sound referred to as “electropop”.

Grammy nominated, multi-platinum selling bassist, and lyricist, Pete Wentz is ready to tear up the stage with his new band Black Cards. Wentz was part of Fall Out Boy from 2002-2009 and when he took a break from music to focus on his new family, he found himself inspired by a new sound, and eager to share it with his fans.

The Black Cards emerged as a result of Pete's enlightening Jamaican vacation where he was inspired by Jamaican root reggae bands. He then enlisted pop vocalist, Bebe Rexha and Spencer Peterson on drums to create a new reggae infused, 80’s British rock sound. This band definitely knows how to get a crowd going and on their feet! So wear some comfortable shoes when you come to see them at ETHOS LA FASHION WEEK.

Project Ethos LA Artist Spotlight: Celena De Luna

Based in Covina, CA, Celena is currently a Fine Arts Major at PCC (Pasadena City College), with a minor in Environmental Studies. Celena’s appreciation for art began at an early age. She first began by taking art classes when she was young and has continued practicing and pursuing her passion.

Rather than relying solely on her natural talent, Celena hopes to expand and improve on her craft. Comfortable experimenting with an array of mediums, from colored pencil to spray paint, Celena admits,"I love me some strong colCurrently, Celena finds herself gravitating towards oil painting and screen printing.

Celena admits that her source of inspiration derives from people and humanitarian concepts, but most influentially, that of Indian culture. Fascinated with their common use of bright colors and detailed designs, Celena one day hopes to raise enough money through her art-inspired T-shirts to study abroad in India for art and philosophy. She also aspires to teach children in developing countries the importance of creativity and just how powerful the voice of art can be.

Celena hopes that her artwork will help inspire others, and overall, make a positive impact on how people treat not only each other, but the environment as well. She strives to change people’s perceptions on the definition of what beauty truly is.

Then we have the dance-inducing band, Cuckoo Chaos, who won “Best Alternative Band” in 2010 at the San Diego Music Awards and are currently finishing their highly anticipated debut full length record. The Magic Marketplace

MAGIC, or The Magic Marketplace, is a bi-annual trade show that showcases men's and women’s apparel, accessories and footwear. It has become the largest apparel and accessory trade event in the U.S. The tradeshow previews trends and apparel to hundreds of thousands of people whom attend from all over the world. Each February and August the largest and most influential network of buyers, brands, and media unite for this event and provide an inside perspective on the trends that will influence consumers today. Fashion is ever changing, and new trends and merchandise are always in demand.

MAGIC, short for Men’s Apparel Guild in California, started as an association of Los Angeles men’s wear manufacturers in 1933. Around that time, the association went by Men’s Wear Manufacturers of Los Angeles. In 1942, their first show, the Roundup, took place in Palm Springs. Six years later, the association officially became the Men’s Apparel Guild in California.

Unlike today, MAGIC had two locations for its biannual shows, with the first covering the spring and summer markets in Palm Springs, while the Fall and Winter market shows took place in San Diego. Both shows found their home in the Los Angeles Convention Center in 1979 and, through its growth, opened its doors for retailers worldwide to participate. A widespread interest initiated MAGIC’s reputation as the largest, most anticipated fashion trade show in the world. Since 1989, MAGIC has settled down permanently in Las Vegas. The city is the most convenient host to the event since nearby hotels are able to accommodate the hundreds of thousands buyers and participants.

However, MAGIC has had its share of downfalls. Attendance is often unpredictable, but that goes for any trade show. Despite this uncertainty, attendance steadily increases with every event; MAGIC seems to surpass the economic roadblocks. The environment is busy and full of competition, which often makes it difficult for businesses to keep buyers interested at their booths. Business owners have to work up some magic of their own to stand out amongst the thousands of booths.

Though the show is made for the buyer, seminars, better known as Sourcing, at MAGIC are offered to participating business owners to motivate and inspire success. These educational seminars are lead by the industry’s most influential leaders.

In addition, participants are able to set up appointments with buyers through an invaluable database of contact information. You know what they say: It’s networking, networking, networking! MAGIC allows participants to strategically place their booths in specific areas to target buyers. Emerging labels get the chance of a lifetime to showcase their merchandise amongst the big dogs, including Steve Madden, Marc Jacobs, and DKNY. As we all know, opportunities for lines to get carried in stores don’t show up at doorsteps every day. MAGIC seems to be that chance to create business partnerships and exposure to help advance businesses of all sizes. Prices to participate in the trade show can run a little steep, but in the world of fashion, you can’t afford to be left in the dark. Attendees should devise some kind of game plan as to what they want to see due to the size of this iconic trade show.

All Good Things Must Come to an End

When I first began this internship I was so excited. However I figured that, like most things, the sparkle and excitement would fade once I started working more. Quite the opposite. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the longer I worked the more fun I had. I got to know the girls in the office more and I got to know all the other interns more. I found myself looking forward to what crazy conversations would take place that day (like actually meeting people who had never seen The Sandlot) and the two hour long debates on where we should go for lunch.

Amongst all the talk of ice cream cookie sandwiches and deep fried anything, though, I found my fellow interns and I actually learning. We learned how to overcome the fear of calling buyers and curators, how to let the rude comments and hang ups from buyers and curators roll off our backs, and how to work together to contribute something significant to all of our shows. I must say I am so grateful to have been able to have this experience and to work with such talented people. It turned out to be more than I ever thought it could be.

I still remember the e-mail my instructor sent to our class about an internship for Project Ethos, a fashion, music and art company. I sent my resume in and was excited to hear from Brianne, the PR Director, shortly after. It was already time for our orientation meeting, where we would meet Jason, the owner, Brianne, as well as the other interns. We were lucky to end up with such a great crowd. Now it is hard to believe that this is my last day at the office here in LA already. Over the past months we got some insight of the business behind the events Project Ethos puts on. There is a lot of work in all different areas that needs to be taken care of and it was interesting to learn step by step how we could help out and do research to find all the information that was needed. However, it is time for me to say bye and thank you to Project Ethos for the great opportunity.

Art Scene Hits the Streets in San Diego

This September Project Ethos is going back to San Diego, home of colorful, exciting, and fresh graffiti art. There are murals all over the city that combines spray paint and acrylic on all kinds of surfaces. A big trend in the San Diego art world is for street artists to collaborate together in order to make art that breaks boundaries and is designed for the whole community to enjoy.

Chor Boogie

Chor Boogie is one of San Diego’s premier street artists. He was born and raised in San Diego and decided at a young age that he would be an artist. Boogie’s artwork is influenced by classical painters like Michelangelo, surreal artists like Dali, and is infused with spray-painting techniques from modern day graffiti artists like Phase2. Boogie uses unique colors, movement, shapes, and light in his work in order to wake up the viewer. He paints on buildings because it gives the piece a sense of belonging and creation that every passerby can enjoy and appreciate.

Dave “Bunny Kitty” Persue

Dave Persue, also known as “Bunny Kitty”, has a collection of spray paint art all over San Diego that is unique, hip, and fun. You can easily identify one of Persue’s murals by his trademark cartoon cat wearing a rabbit costume. Persue’s artwork takes a spin on traditional graffiti, using bright pinks and purples, and characters that have a cute playful cartoon quality. Persue is also known for working with other promising San Diego street artists. His latest collaboration was part of the SD Wall Session series on July 4th and 5^th at an art supply store.

Gloria “Glow” Muriel

Gloria Muriel, also known as “Glow,” primarily works with acrylic on canvas to create an enchanting and melancholy world of surreal subjects immersed in nature. Muriel has recently branched out to work with mural mediums and with other San Diego street artists. Whether Muriel’s work is on canvas or a building, she uses symbols and mystery to express an intermingling feeling of sadness and joy. She paints girls with large, sad eyes that are immersed in nature and music to symbolize losing yourself in another world of creativity.

Michael “Monstrinho” Amorillo

Michael Amorillo, also known as “Monstrinho” (Portuguese for little monster,) draws inspiration from the beach scene of San Diego. Amorillo uses a variety of mediums including spray paint and acrylic on all kinds of surfaces. His work pops off of buildings and bursts with color and imagination. Amorillo’s art takes inspiration from musicians like Bob Marley, Os Gemeos, and Keith Herring. His early interest in comic books accounts for the story-telling quality of his art. The theme for Amorillo’s art is the feeling of complete freedom without limitations or boundaries.

Project Ethos’ Sophomore Event Sells Out

A capacity crowd of consumers and attendees gathered to appreciate top local talent

San Francisco, CA – The worlds of fashion, music and art collided last Thursday, August 11^th at supperclub bringing an explosion of emerging talent to the forefront of entertainment. Members of the industry in addition to event goers were all on hand filling the multi-story venue to capacity to witness an evening of sophistication and artistry.

Calrton Hair winner Margarita Melano lit up the red carpet when she entered with her sleek and funky up-do created at the nearby Carlton Hair Salon. She then toted a gift bag featuring bath salts and lip balms from By Nieves, shampoos and conditioners from Bumble and Bumble, decorative reusable water bottles from Earthlust, magazines from Official Media Sponsor 7 x 7 Magazine and more.

Dragon Fly designs from NEST the charitable partner for the evening set up in Bar Rouge to sell their incredible semi-precious stone jewelry and educate attendees on how NEST helps women go from poverty to self-sufficiency in third world countries.

The upstairs art gallery featured pieces hung on chainlink fences and was abuzz with curators, media and art lovers alike as five local visual artists were on display. Next to it was a vendor table for JewelMint by Kate Bosworth which sold pieces from their online boutique. A Meet and Greet with participants was held in the Bar Rouge including hosted cocktails from Pink Pigeon while AmpLive performed for the masses.

Attention was turned towards the white runway that was lined with glowing vitaminwater zero™ bottles. Sultry Frederick’s of Hollywood Swim stepped first on to the runway, followed by Cardiwrap by Kymaro. Next, the garments as part of the “vitaminwater zero™ Flavor Fashionista Challenge” were showcased including Lauren Crafford (LHC Couture), Stephanie Verrieres & Kimie Sako (Verrieres & Sako) and Wen Guo (Boditecture).

The over one thousand text-in votes resulted in the award, valued at $3,000 going to Larissa Verdussen (RAG-DOLL designs). “My vitaminwater zero™ flavor was DRIVE. I was inspired by the sweet, energetic orange drink. I was also inspired by the name. I made this garment in two days and try to make at least one garment every day that I am in my shop. Since the theme for this challenge was “Going Green” my reclaimed piece was a mens jacket that I made into a bussel. I’m so excited!”

DJ Ajax kept the crowd partying until last call.

Nothing rounds up models quicker than warm weather, sandy beaches, the boardwalk, and Miami Swim Fashion Week. From Miami, LA, and Australia to Brazil, Miami Swim Week 2011 was full of international inspiration and overwhelming success. Imagine a week full of slick sexy metallic, high-tech fabrics resistant to salt and chlorine-fade, stripes of every kind, bright pastels, neon prints, and silhouettes that transform swim suits into art. The diversity throughout Miami Swim was inevitable and inspired by everything from travel, to ecological responsibility, and even alcohol like SKYY Vodka. Here is a break down of Miami Swim Fashion Week and some insight from a previous Ethos participant that was also recently part of the electrifying Salon Allure in Miami.

Mercedes Benz Swim Week, which took place at the Raleigh Hotel, is the relaxed, laid-back summer version of NY Fashion Week. With the events starting later in the day, everyone participating and attending are able to enjoy their time and soak up the Miami sun. Designers from all over the world came out to present their new, barely there swimwear lines, including, White Sands Australia, Poko Pano, Beach Bunny Swimwear, Crystal Jin, L*Space by Monica Wise, Wildfox Swimwear, Caffé Swimwear, Mara Hoffman Swim, Aqua Di Lara, A.Ché, Red Carter, Cia.Marítima, Luli Fama, Luxe by Lisa Vogel, Lisa Blue, Nicolita and True Religion. But the designer that took the crown for best designer had to be Diesel. Diesel was not only the kick off show with Gossip Girl’s Jessica Szhor as the guest DJ, but they also had Laguna Beach and The Hills star, Kristin Cavallari, walking the runway in the world’s first glass bikini inspired by their sponsor SKYY Vodka.

Salon Allure returned this year at the W Hotel and Residences, as the first and only exclusively luxury swim, fiber, and resort tradeshow. The designers collections were presented differently than the average show at Swim Week. They were showcased in ocean front studios and suites. Salon Allure allowed a limited amount of people to attend and the intimate environment lead to the show's success. Because of the limited space most attendees were buyers, which gave the buyers and designers more time to network. Designer Red Carter said, “We spent more time with representatives that aligned with our business goals. We were able to be more strategic, which lead to more business”. The participating designers included: Red Carter, Diesel, Tori Praver, Mara Hoffman, Jessica Simpson, Nycked, Lisa Curran, 6 Shore Road, Martha Rey, and previous Project Ethos participant, biKa by AmbiKa Sanjana.

Mogul Events and ecosystM created the first annual Haute Natured sustainable swimwear show at The Setai Hotel. Although Haute Natured was a sideshow of Mercedes Benz Swim Week, it still brought a lot of attention. The designers, including Eco Swim, Linda Loudermilk, Meadow, and MAE Couture, took designing a bikini to the next level. The designers used recycled bottles, upcycled fabrics and repurposed military parachutes to create the eco-friendly designs. Linda Loudermilk received a lot of attention by creating the world’s first fully compostable bathing suit. Loudermilk said “the suit won’t dissolve on a woman’s body, but bury it under dirt, like in a land fill, and it would break down within 180 days”. Haute Natured also kept the green theme going with celebrity green-carpet arrivals and electric sports car displays by Tesla.

Swim Week’s charitable side, Style Saves, is a non-profit that raises money to buy school clothing for foster children and underprivileged youth. They celebrated their one year anniversary at the Soho Beach House with an event that included three runway shows and much more. The participants for the event included Trina Turk, B. Rawlings, Papi, and Neiman Marcus. Models walked the runway as DJ’s Ess and Emm provided the musical entertainment, and the show ended with an after-party sponsored by Moët & Chandon Imperial Ice. Luxury goods and services were silently auctioned off and all proceeds from the event went to benefit Style Saves’ students.

Previous Project Ethos Participant, Ambika shares her insight about Swim Week:

Project Ethos: What sets Salon Allure apart from other trade shows?

Ambika: Salon Allure was definitely different than other trade shows I have been to in a few ways. The setting: The show was at the beautiful W hotel on South Beach. One entire floor was booked and dedicated to swimwear designers, each room serving as our "booth". The view was the stunning ocean and beach which seemed the appropriate setting for a swimwear trade show. The intimacy: The setting provided an intimacy that was refreshing. Instead of the traditional gigantic convention center, with buyers huddling down isles, this set up allowed for a more personal interaction. The set up: There was a kick-off fashion show on the opening night showcasing all the participating designers. Each evening there was a "media lounge" for a couple of hours...where all the designers, buyers and media networked over cocktails sponsored by Grey Goose. We made some amazing contacts here in this informal setting.

PE: Would you participate in it next year?

A: I would absolutely participate in this show next year. I feel like it was a great show and we had an amazing experience.

PE: Did you receive any orders or did you feel the show was just a preview of upcoming swimwear?

A: We did receive orders at this show, as well as tons of contacts, media and press coverage.

Project Ethos: What did you enjoy the most about the show?

A:   I loved meeting and interacting with all the other talented designers. I met some amazing people and really loved the venue.

PE: Would you change anything about the show or do you have suggestions on how to improve it for next year?

A:   All around it was pretty amazing, however if there was one suggestion I could offer it would be...better lighting and sound at the fashion show. The lighting was not ideal for photographers, media and photo journalists. I would have set up the ramp different.

PE: Final comments?

A:   Miami Swim Week is a must experience for all swimwear designers. Being in the city filled with every hot swimwear company out there, models, celebs, hot pool parties and the rising temperatures - priceless.

Project Ethos Fashion: Tall Tennies

I’ve been feeling nostalgic recently for simpler times, when my shopping was solely at Limited Too (now "Justice," say whaa?) and homework was all about memorizing your times tables. I miss the days when my wardrobe staples were black velvet flares, a neon yellow sweater, and my go-to shoes: Sbicca platform tennies circa 1998. As most of girls of my generation will admit, the Spice Girls played a crucial role in my sense of style. Their cropped tops, bellbottoms and insane platforms just seemed so right.

Well thanks to a new fashion trend, I don’t have to miss those beloved Sbiccas much longer – platforms are back. Clearly platforms in the way of wedges and some select boots have been present in the fashion world for quite some time, so that’s really nothing new. But, I’m talking about good old tennis shoes…with an insane platform.

Now I’m guessing you’re probably reading this and thinking the girls at Project Ethos are losing it, but I beg to differ. Reach deep down, find your inner Spice Girl, and I’m sure you’ll be just as stoked as I am about the resurrection of this fabulous footwear.

The trend is in its infant stages right now, popping up on blogs (SRC783) and in a few photos of daring fashionistas who are brave enough to be our shoe soldiers.

The true sign that the platform sneakers were wiggling their way back in was at Prada’s spring 2011 ready-to-wear collection featuring some killer platform sneakers. I’m still drooling over these, like most others – there was (is?) a wait list to snag a pair of these sweet kicks.

Project Ethos Music Spotlight: The Cab

In need of an authentic, fresh sound in your iPod? Look no further than Las Vegas originators, The Cab. A city known for its bright lights and even brighter talent, this alternative band offers catchy lyrics and sounds. For fans of Fall Out Boy and Panic! At the Disco, The Cab emerged onto the scene with their single, “I’ll Run” off their debut album Whisper Wars.

This band has gone through their share of ups and downs, concerning former band mates and parting ways with their label ‘Fueled by Ramen.’ But just like any survivor, this band continued on, dedicated to their music, but most admirably to their fans.

Currently on summer tour with band, All Time Low, be on the lookout for their upcoming album ‘SymphonySoldiers.’ It’s been a long time coming, but from the sounds of it, it definitely will not disappoint!

The Reinvention of the first Social Network

It is no secret that we live in the digital age. Today we are connected every possible way. We have iPods with Wi-Fi, smart phones with the Internet at the touch of our fingertips, wireless Internet hubs that can be accessed from the most remote locations. The last ten years have brought the information super highway into the forefronts of everyone’s lives and has made social media the hottest new thing to become involved with.

We all remember Myspace, it seems like just yesterday my best friend was forcing me create a profile and become another Myspace addict. Almost a decade has gone by since Myspace debuted and it is no longer the giant of social networks, Facebook is now the dominant site for keeping in touch with friends. Myspace, however, is not content with taking the backseat to this whirlwind obsession that has become Facebook.

Myspace was once a destination for up and coming musicians, and thanks to Justin Timberlake and the Specific Media Company, it will once again try and play a pivotal role in the entertainment industry. Myspace was bought for a mere $35 million from NewsCorp, owned by Rupert Murdoch.

The idea is to reinvent what is already in place and turn Myspace into a celebrity-driven entertainment destination, hence where Justin Timberlake comes in. Specific Media is insistent that artists such as Timberlake are eager to have a place where they can post original content, and where fans can have it more readily accessible.

Facebook would no longer be competition, but rather, the two sites would compliment each other; artists will be able to manage their Facebook sites from their Myspace profiles.

No specific plans have been released for the exact idea and design behind the ever-changing site, but the ultimate goal is to turn the failed social network site into a "premiere digital destination" for original shows, video content and music.” Sounds like another Youtube; guess we’ll just have to wait and see what the future brings.

Last Shift at Project Ethos

Crazy as it seems, it is my final shift as an intern here at Project Ethos! Being my first internship, I definitely gained valuable knowledge about the business world in general, as well as the fashion, music, and art industry. I learned firsthand how to be a successful salesperson, as well as effectively researching and storing important information for upcoming shows. Project Ethos was the perfect place for me to start as I enter further into my education and working career. There was a casual, positive feel in the office; music was always playing, and we, food-obsessed interns, always had our 2 o’clock lunch break, after drooling over every online menu.

Not only did I gain personal experience and education about business, I learned the importance of teamwork and cooperation within an entire company. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses, extra knowledge about one place, artist or genre of music, and when all shared and collaborated, it makes things go smoothly and time effectively. Whether I was calling and inviting VIP curators or researching new venues, or even writing blogs, these past few months working at Project Ethos have taught me important lessons for the years to come. I have gained confidence in my abilities as an employee and as a knowledgeable salesperson for the company.

I look forward to continuing my studies at USC, even as I change my mind on my career choice probably every week. I hold strong interests in law, business, psychology, and even French, but I know that no matter where I end up, I will look back on this internship with great merit and appreciation.

Project Ethos Music Spotlight: Amp Live

Project Ethos will be in San Francisco on August 11th to showcase up and coming talented artist in fashion, music, and art. One of the artists from the music category is Amp Live a local Bay Area music producer/DJ and a former group member of Zion 1. His unique beats fall into the Electroacoustic, Ghettotech, and Hip Hop genres. His latest album "Murder at the Discotech" was launched on June 15th of 2010 and is available in stores now.

Amp Live has produced for many artists such as Akon, Linkin Park, MGMT, Nicole Scherzinger from the Pussycat Dolls, Goapele, and Flipsyde. He has also produced music for TV shows and movies such as "So You Think You Can Dance", "Americas Next Top Model", "Friday Night Lights", and "Big Fat Liar" just to name a few.

Building the Nest

To continue the spirit of shedding light on deserving talent, we decided to team up with an awesome nonprofit called Nest for our upcoming event in San Francisco on August 11^th.

Nest provides small, interest-free loans to women overseas to create their very own small businesses. Their products are sent to be sold here in the U.S. Personally, I believe results are amazing and inspiring. First, there’s a continuation of ancient traditions from around the world being sold through the Western marketplace, and even in mainstream brands.

These Reef flip flops were woven by four communities of Mayan women in the Highlands.

LORD + TAYLOR, in collaboration with Feed 3, used traditional ikat fabrics made by Guatemalan women to create a colorful array of tote bags. Feed 3 later made a second round of bags, this time sold exclusively through American Eagle Outfitters.

Nest chose to focus on communities of women for reasons that often go unnoticed. Women, for centuries, have been the artists of the family. Think about it. Mothers have made clothing for the family, improvised or created household objects, and have decorated the home. Nest believes the inherent skills women possess provides for a business model that allows for a stable income.

Lastly, Nest provides a bridge to cross from poverty to self-sufficiency for these women. The success of Nest has shown one critical pattern – the funds these women earn from Nest trickle down in benefit of their children and the overall community. There’s food on the table, medicine for wounds, and a new found sense of community that was, at one point, unable to be attained due to economical or cultural roadblocks for women. As far as the loans Nest provides to these women, no monetary payback is expected. Instead, Nest asks for sellable material in order to continue the cycle of profit to loans for more communities in need. This basic model is used to avoid any cultural stigma of loans, and an often irreversible cycle of debt.

Project Ethos Spotlight: San Francisco Artists

In just a few short days, Project Ethos will be heading up to San Francisco and we couldn’t be more psyched about the artists who will showing their work at the show. Locals Kelly Clancy, Lawrence Yang, Tony Papesh, and Boris Jovanovic all bring something new and exciting to the table, making for an unforgettable art show on August 11.

Kelly Clancy

Kelly Clancy, originally from Philadelphia, clearly has a passion for art, but also is currently studying neuroscience at UC Berkeley. Her dream-scape imagery in comic style balances a fine line between

Clancy is clearly changing comic style, challenging people to view her commentary as a unique take on social and political times. She finds inspiration in her dreams and from the impossible task of applying rationale to the irrational. Clancy herself says her pieces range in topics, from “alienation to love; from decay to globalism; from faith to the nameless fears that pervade our psyches.”

Clancy’s illustration series, ‘Kids with Guns’ shows an amazing attention to detail with colors draw the viewer’s eye to different emphases in each piece. This same attention to detail carries over to other aspects of her work, including paintings and design.

Lawrence Yang

Next up we have the amazing Lawrence Yang, an artist with graffiti art and traditional Chinese painting influences. With that kind of combination, you know you’re in for some astounding one-of-a-kind art, and that’s exactly what you get.

Yang works with ink, marker, and watercolor, using color in dramatic ways. His bright and colorful images bring surreal characters and settings to life – making you think he’s crawled into your head and painting one of your most vivid dreams.

He’s been drawing since he was a kid, and we’re sure his talent will continue to grow and develop. Yang is currently living in SF with his (I already love him) “imaginary pets, Cholo and Binky.”

Tony Papesh

Tony Papesh is the next SF artist you can expect to see at supperclub. This guy is an all around artist, working in the fields of digital, sketch and paintings. Here’s another artist who really knows how to utilize color.

Still within the supernatural, whimsical realm, Papesh’s images and sketches are consuming. The simplicity and attention to detail usually has me staring at his work for much longer than I’ve realized. His work has a way of drawing you in and will either make you laugh, or think really hard. To see what I mean, you can see his work on his website.

Boris Jovanovic

And last, my certainly not least, is the talented Boris Jovanovic. When I first saw his work, all I could think was, “I need that.” Jovanovic was born in Yugoslavia and used sketching as an escape when he was younger. Now based in San Francisco, his art has a dark beauty, often with hints of tension.

Amazing use of color seems to be a theme with our SF artists, something that is oh so refreshing. Jovanovic uses splashes of color in his pieces, but they never overpower the art. Instead, his subtle use and pops of color are meant to represent glimmers of hope.

Telefunk is an American Alternative Hiphop/ House group formed in 2009 by two brothers, Producer, Rapper and Multi Instrumentalist Chukwuemeka “Ryan Francisca” Nwankwo and Singer/Songwriter Chinedu “Troy Francisca” Nwankwo in their apartment in Costa Mesa, CA. Despite the fact the band is fairly recent, both brothers had started making records back in 2003 when Ryan produced their mother ‘s first studio album titled Hello Africa. The album was marketed in South Africa, but never got any recognition. Their lyrics are 100% original from everyday experiences and musical sounds are produced from basically nothing but pure talent and skill by Ryan and his keyboard.

You may ask…how do I know so much info about this band? Google? Research? Rumors? Word on the street? ... No, in fact I have had a great opportunity to meet the band and despite their busy schedule, hold a meet and greet. So in fact, all these details are well-documented from the mouths of the band members themselves. Also, I was able be a fly on the wall behind the scenes at their latest video shoot for their new song "LA Anthem", and obtain an intimate, on camera interview exclusively for Project Ethos. Keep checking our blog because it will be released soon with private clips from the video shoot in downtown LA. To boot, the members of the band have a contradictory self-image. When talking with them of course they think their music is amazing, which clearly it is, but on the other hand, they have a humble attitude. For example they explained a story to me when they were walking at a shopping mall like any other day, when a fan recognized them and mentioned how their song touched his life, which was almost like an unreal situation. Also, to their surprise, the fan was an older aged man who was not their ultimate target market. This circumstance reveals the diversity Telefunk has to offer.

One characteristic the band possesses that sets themselves apart from other groups is the sense of closeness and family between everybody involved in their lives. Obviously, the brothers share a special bond, but that is beside the point. They use their own home for meetings, video/photo shoots, producing and writing their music, use the same cameraman, same sponsors, models, stylists, makeup artists, anybody who may be involved in any aspect. Furthermore, Troy Francisca is the main songwriter for the group. His view of music is also another attribute that sets them apart. In his view, of course fame and fortune is an ultimate goal, but certain songs he writes are personal, too confidential for public enjoyment.

Merely from spending a small number of days on set with the band members from Telefunk, in only a few moments they have already allowed me to recognize their passion for not only music overall, but the infatuation with the music they create. This is why Project Ethos is so amazing. We acknowledge up and coming musicians, artists, and designers who have enthusiasm, fire, and talent, and back them with the belief that they can make it big in the industry. These artists may be discovered with a bit of help from our team, because of course tremendous time and effort from our company goes into planning and executing the events, but good ole talent is what gets them recognized.

For most of the designs in AdoreCarol’s line of charms and jewelry, little things do come in small packages. Sometimes I don’t know what’s cuter – the fact that Carol Margaret Reyes of AdoreCarol is probably the cutest nineteen-year-old I have ever met, or the charms themselves.

My personal favorites are the cupcakes. It’s an ultra girly addition that I can’t wait to attach to my cellphone. All of them have such exquisite details, from the bows to the ridges of the cupcake frosting. Even the color combinations are a sure standout.

Lacee: My name is Lacee! But friends call me Barbie. I have an infatuation with rhinestones and bows. I have every color hair bow to match all my outfits’ everyday… no seriously though I wear one everyday. And I also rhinestone EVERYTHING. At first it was a hobby but I’m in love with sparkles. I rhinestone my clothes, shoes, bows, phones, etc., and now I even sell objects, most commonly car license plate frames. Ok I sound a little obsessive but if you saw an example, you would want me to make you something.

Maybe if I tell you a little more about myself it would explain my little obsession. I am a fashion merchandising major at Long Beach State, and I have always had a passion for fashion ever since I could remember. Most commonly when I tell people my field of study, they think I will be the individual creating the clothes, but that is not that case. Fashion MERCHANDISING is about everything except making clothes, which can consist of the visual, and business sides of fashion. In the future I have many dreams of careers and its so hard to choose just one so I want to do it all!!

This internship has been an amazing experience for me. And I am not just saying this because I want to make a good image for the company. They have an outstanding reputation as it is, but I want people to know the perspective from an intern’s point of view. Before becoming an intern I had the opportunity to volunteer at the LA Fashion week event. It was an event of a lifetime! And now to be working behind the scenes, helping make the affair take place is even more unbelievable.

The people working here are inspiring. The individuals who work for Project Ethos make us feel so involved and as if we make a difference in the event. We are not ordinary interns who do paperwork or go fetch coffee, but we actually do research, create presentations, and find musicians, artists, and designers for the event. I feel like working here I have made a new handful of genuine friends and I know for a fact we will all keep in touch when the internship is over. Its not one of those get lunch on our breaks together bond, but rather go on a three day fashion camp together kind of friendship.

Thelma: Hello! My name is Thelma Annan and I am currently an intern at Project Ethos. I major in Media and Cultural Studies at UC Riverside. Being a true Los Angeles native, I am a hardcore Lakers fan, as my future children will be. I am a sucker for 80’s films and consider NYLON magazine my Bible. I absolutely adore Kelly Ripa and Louise Roe and aspire to have a successful career like theirs one day.

I am more than grateful to work at Project Ethos. This is a very hands on, rewarding experience that I would not change for the world. Working here has forced me to push my comfort zone without me having to sacrifice my opinions or personality. I feel like I am actually part of the team. I learn something new every time I step into the office, whether professionally or personally. Working here is something I will never forget. Marra: Hey there! My name is Marra Camille Manansala. I’m about to finish up my last year at Cal State Fullerton as Communications/PR major. This is the third month as a Project Ethos intern, and I absolutely love it! For anyone who wants to get into the big, bad world of public relations – this is the perfect internship. I get to pitch to the media by e-mail and by phone, and even post on Project Ethos’ blog. It was a bit scary at first, but honestly, I’d rather get over my fears at an internship than my first day of my real job as a post-grad. I get to discover new music in and out of Los Angeles, get inspired to try out new fashion trends as I research emerging fashion lines, and sit in awe of the art that we come across. Right now, my iTunes playlist consists of Pac Div, Jhene Aiko (both of which I have written about in previous posts), Kendrick Lamar, and The Weeknd. Lastly, all of the other interns are really funny and easy to get along with…especially with the topic of food.

Christi: My name is Christi Callahan and I am a senior at Cal State Fullerton majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in entertainment and tourism. As far as myself goes, I love shoes and I'm a huge foodie. I love trying new and exotic foods and pretty much anything from a food truck.

I learned about this internship through my major at school and immediately jumped on it. So far it has been so amazing. The people are so incredibly nice and they have allowed all of us interns to really get into the work. Lately, we've been doing a lot of research on cities for upcoming shows. We've been hunting down designers, artists, and musicians that we like. I think the best part is that I feel like our opinions actually matter and I really can't wait to see what else Project Ethos has in store for us

Sarah: I have an addiction to fashion blogs (particularly Oracle Fox, BLDG25, and SRC783), my favorite food is uncooked tortillas, look to the Olsen twins for fashion advice, enjoy singing loudly despite my horrible voice, and am happiest when I’m barefoot. On the weekends you can find me in random vintage shops or hiking (yes, there are actually places to hike in LA). I’m currently a fourth year at UCLA majoring in communication studies. I’ll be graduating in December and will be moving up to SF as soon as I’m done.

I’ve been as intern at Project Ethos since April, and it was pure luck that I found out about an opening. I had just finished up an internship with the Fox News Channel and was looking for something that would provide some creative opportunities and poof, UCLA emailed me about an internship with Project Ethos. Fashion, music and art? Hello perfection.

Madyson: Coming into my sophomore year at USC, I began the Project Ethos internship in April of my freshman year. Since then I have worked to enhance several participant databases, researching and contacting upcoming fashion designers, curators, and musicians. I have always held a great passion for music and art, as I have been dancing since the age of five. Throughout the past few years, I have travelled extensively and discovered new cultures with which I have fallen in love! I have become a huge electronic music fan after attending Oxegen Music Festival in Punchestown, Ireland with my older sister, Jessica. I hope to study abroad in Europe next summer and further expand my love for European cultures!

Cinema at the Cemetery

The Hollywood Forever Cemetery is famously known for what else, its resting place of the glamorous Hollywood elite. But this cemetery does more than offer its respects to these legendary figures. The cemetery presents Cinespia film screenings, perfect for the nontraditional date night with your love bug or a friend’s night out.

Beginning on May 19th until the end of summer, this landmark becomes an unlikely host to hundreds of moviegoers, screenings films every weekend night.

Past films include: Goodfellas, Heathers, and Saturday Night Fever. But most creatively was the recent screening of Ghostbusters. What better place to show a film about ghosts than within actual cemetery grounds!

Project Ethos Fashion: The White Noise is Loud!

Wearing white pants has always been a stigma for women, but designers such as Bottega Veneta, Alexander Wang, Christian Siriano, and Thakoon are challenging women to push the boundaries this summer and go all out in white. And I'm talking pure white. Whether it be the little white dress or the attention-demanding white suit, the crisp color makes your summer tan look extra yummy.

If you're worried about your white getting dirty, just be sure to wear it to the right occasion. An all-white outfit is probably not the best choice when running around town doing errands or such. Stay clear of dirty seats, and make sure the food goes into your mouth, not your lap (you'll be surprised how often that happens). It doesn't hurt to carry around a Tide-to-go, either! I know it sounds scary, but it is definitely do-able, so come closer to the white!

Most of the runways trending the white-out are seen as minimal-chic looks, no fussy accessories, makeup or hair. So it being summer, white is probably one of the easiest "throw-it-on" trends--think simplicity. Let the white speak for itself.

‘Tis the season to be colorful! Bold and bright colors are definitely in this summer. Introduced in early spring, the trend of color blocking, bright lips and eyes does not seem to be dwindling down anytime soon. So go beyond your comfort zones of blacks, whites and greys and embrace the colorful change.

The Bold – Color Blocking

Afraid to take the entire color plunge? Start off small if need be by balancing out your brights with neutrals. Start with one color block piece, such as a pair of colorful shorts, or pants and add a neutral one. You can also try matching up your color block piece with a sullen patterned piece.

Try a head-to-toe color ensemble for a more dramatic look. You can take the safe, yet equally fashionable road with a color block jumpsuit or dress. Or you could also put separate pieces together. A nice pair of pants, paired with an equally colorful blazer, or any other kind of outerwear will do the trick. To ensure success, try sticking with the adjacent hues on the color wheel, but don’t be afraid to experiment!

Color blocking can apply to shoes as well. Footwear possesses underestimated potential. The right shoes can tie an entire outfit together. Slip on a pair of these shoes to add to your colorful ensemble, or simply to add an unexpected pop of color to your outfit. Whether one bold color or multi, shoes can make just the right fashion statement.

The Beautiful – Beauty Essentials

Pucker Up: A lipstick shade gaining a lot of attention this season is coral. Coral is a color that is appealing on every skin tone, offering just the right amount of style and individuality. So don’t be afraid to take this color for a spin!

Eye catching: Colorful eyes are an essential this summer season. Add a pop of color to your eye shadow and eyeliner routine. Try focusing on colors such as golds, greens, purples and yes, even blues. Dusted across your entire lid, or simply swept along your bottom lash line, these colors are sure to allure.

A few weeks ago, I ventured out with my fellow for date night and we were in the mood for something new. After a quick Yelp search, Manchego was our destination for the night.

When the restaurant is named after traditional Spanish cheese, you know you’re in for a great meal.

Located on Main Street in Santa Monica, this small, tapas-style restaurant has an intimate feel with dim lighting, amazing service, and even better food.

We were the only ones in the restaurant and with the help of our waitress, selected the roasted red pepper and feta spicy dip, shrimp wrapped with prosciutto, the two cheese plate with manchego and iberico (served with bread and the house tomato sauce), and were given a ton of complementary humus.

As we finished off our meal with a shared slice of cheesecake, we noticed the restaurant was completely packed. If you come an hour or so after they open, expect a decent wait.

We both were a little nervous waiting for the check because we didn’t even look at prices as we ordered away, but to our surprise, it was under $40. This was thanks in large part to Manchego’s (brace yourself) BYOB policy and NO CORK FEE! I had smuggled some $10 bottle of zin we had sitting at home in my purse and timidly pulled it out when the waitress smiled and asked, “Would you like me to open that for you?” Um, yes please.

Manchego does not disappoint. If you’re in need of some tapas and romance for a reasonable price, definitely check it out.

Project Ethos Fashion: 90s Flashback

Welcome back 1990s, we missed you.

Leather, plaid, boots, baggy jeans and messy hair – the 90s were grunge-tastic. For all the girls out there who like to be fashionable without all the fuss, this trend is definitely for you.

90s-inspired fashion has been popping up all over the place; like the new Velveteen Docs by Dr. Martens (found at Free People) or high-waisted jeans that can be spotted on every 20-something with a sense of style.

Even brightly colored hair has made a comeback. Back in 1998, Gwen Stefani rocked a blue do at the MTV Music Video Awards. Fast forward to 2011: blue hair is totally IN.

It’s been rocked by bridesmaids and flower girls, Katy Perry at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards (although hers was a wig), and Kat Von D earlier this year. Even a girl in my econ class has blue hair.

And I don’t think I even need to mention the Hammer pants, currently referred to as Harem pants.

To get some carefree, grunge fashion tips, look no further than the Olsen twins. Their constant pairing of baggy plaids, messy hair and ripped denim meshes perfectly with this trend.

Smells like teen spirit…

Project Ethos Fashion: Turband Trend

I’m one of those people who really can’t pull off a full on turban, so the turband is the perfect alternative. The turband is the love child of the headband and the turban…or just basically an elastic headband with a slipknot in the front.

They’re easy to find pretty much anywhere that sells hair accessories (try Nasty Gal or Gold Saturn), but they’re even easier to make. All you need is a scarf or long piece of fabric.

The ‘How To Tie A Turband 3 Ways’ video gives a step-by-step guide for tying 1) The I Love Lucy, 2) The Hermes Way, and 3) The Moroccan Princess (my personal favorite).

The turband has been seen on everyone from boho queen Ashley Olsen to countless fashion bloggers. The hassle-free headband is ultra-chic and added bonus: it can stylishly hide a bad hair day.

Now just pair with some cat eye sunnies and you’re set.

Project Ethos Fashion: DIY Time

With July 4th quickly approaching, I couldn’t help but feeling patriotic. I needed some new American swag for the holiday. I turned my sights to some American flag shorts, but seeing as how the ones I wanted from Topshop were around $70, I improvised.

I took a quick trip to Goodwill and after hardly any digging, found a killer pair of mom jeans that fit like a glove: $3. When I got home, I cut them into shorts. Then tried them on and re-cut them again and again until they were just the right length.

I had some fabric paint from a previous project, but WalMart has some for super cheap that you can pick up.

After the shorts are cut, paint the right front side solid blue and the left front side solid red. I think it looks cool to only paint to the side seam and avoid the pockets, but to each his own!

After the paint is completely dry, you can either draw stars on the blue side or use a stencil. Fill them in with the white fabric paint.

Then on to the last step, the stripes. I just used a ruler to space them out then filled alternating ones with the white fabric paint.

After your shorts are totally dry, the last step is just to wash and dry them so they fray a little. And tada, you’re ready for some 4th of July action.

Project Ethos Music Spotlight: Jhene Aiko

Los Angeles has been blessed with a lot of great musical talent lately, and the city has another up-and-coming talent by the name of Jhene Aiko. You might recognize the airy and angelic voice from the chorus of “July,” a song that was released last summer on Drake’s Thank Me Later, which has found its home on Jhene’s mixtape, Sailing Soul(s).

This mixtape was released back in March, but it’s definitely something that will be in rotation for all seasons. As corny as this sounds, we all know that girls have a go-to song for all highs and lows of a relationship. Just in time for your summer fling, the songs on Sailing Soul(s) is a fine addition to your summer playlist.

Sailing Soul(s) is the process of frustration, heartbreak, and the art of getting over all wrapped into one. For any girl who doesn’t quite have the ability to get her feelings down in words, no need to worry. The songs are all too relatable, and quite frankly, there’s a lyric perfect for any situation you might be in. So to all boyfriends in the dog house, ex-boyfriends, and failed flings, I’ll just warn you now: Any Jhene Aiko lyric as a Facebook or Twitter post by your girl is a subliminal message directed at you.

Do Better Blues, featuring L.A. rap artist H.O.P.E, takes us on the all too familiar situation of a couple at its breaking point. Through back-to-back verses from a male’s and woman’s point of view, lyrics remind us of the truth of the situation. Most, at least.

Project Ethos Fashion: Say Hello to Crochet

Summer’s finally here and we are all looking for ways to stay cool while looking cool. Well all the fashionistas out there are in luck because this season crochet is making a come back. And all I can say is: I’m in love.

Crochet can be seen in everything from dresses to swimwear and is easy to work into any outfit. Clearly, you’re going to need to put something under it for the most part, so bodycon dresses and skin-tight rompers (found at places like Free People and American Apparel) work great under crochet dresses and skirts.

If you’re working with a crochet top, keep the undershirt tight and simple, with cutoff jeans shorts.

Pulling from 1960s fashion, crochet is very popular and becoming increasingly easier to find. Vintage shops and consignment is still the best way to go when you’re crochet hunting, but if you want something that’s a little less labor-intensive, mainstream stores like Forever21 have some great options.

Every now and again, I have this urge to create, whether it’s art, a piece of clothing, or an accessory. This past weekend I was out shopping and realized that friendship bracelets were everywhere. Free People was selling them for $18 a pop and just before I added one to my shopping bag, I realized, “Hey, I can make this myself!”

So after a quick trip to a local crafts store, I headed home to create a friendship bracelet of my own. I had a vague memory of making this when I was a kid, so I figured it’d come back to me. Not so much.

A little internet browsing and I was back in the game. Honestly…WTF: http://honestlywtf.com/diy/diy-friendship-bracelet has an awesome tutorial that I highly recommend. All you need is embroidery thread, tape and some scissors (and then a little patience).

They’re a little addicting, so be prepared to have a lot of thread on hand for all the color combos you come up with. After you have a few, you can mix up patterns, add rhinestone embellishments, and change colors.

Pile them on to add some flair to any outfit, be it your work attire or your get up for hitting the beach. Happy DIY-ing!
